The Good News: Nausea usually gets a bad reputation. But, during pregnancy, nausea is actually a good sign.

What’s the science behind being nauseous?

When you are in the first trimester of pregnancy, your body is producing hormones (more than when you’re not pregnant) to take care of your baby. The increased hormone levels are what is making you feel nauseous. But, this is a good sign because it means there’s a decreased risk of miscarriage.

What can you do?

We recommend the following:

  • Ginger Tea
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Vitamin B6 (10-25mg, 3x a day)
  • Crackers
Avoid:
  • Greasy foods
  • Fatty foods
  • Heavy foods
  • Spicy foods

Be mindful of food that they baby doesn’t like anymore (i.e., pre-pregnancy you like chicken, and during pregnancy you can’t keep it down, then just give it up during the pregnancy.)

When to be worried?

If you can’t keep water down, then this may cause an electrolyte abnormality or low potassium. Call your doctor and you may need to head to the Emergency Room to get IV hydration and IV medicines.
